How will future energy flows be organized to ensure the highest overall efficiency?

27 Nov 2024

Dr. Reinhard Mackensen from Fraunhofer IEE addresses the central question at the House of Energy Congress: How can future energy flows be organized to ensure the highest overall efficiency?

In order to achieve the ambitious goals of the energy transition by 2030, a systematic shift to renewable energy is essential. This requires a massive expansion of photovoltaics and wind energy and a targeted look at energy flows to understand how they can be optimally located in the consumption sectors. Another key to success lies in digitalization. By 2030, digital mechanisms must be fully operational to efficiently manage the energy system and enable sustainable development even beyond this date. The presentation, recorded during Light + Building 2024 in Frankfurt, offers exciting insights into the challenges and opportunities of the energy system transformation on the path to a climate-friendly, future-proof energy system.

…is conducting pioneering research on the energy transition at the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology in Kassel. With around 450 employees, the institute focuses on key topics such as the resilience, stability, and flexibility of modern energy systems. The emphasis is on sector coupling—particularly in the areas of hydrogen, heat networks, and electromobility—as well as digitalization, which through smart processes, makes the energy sector more efficient and sustainable. The central guiding question of the work is: How can an energy system be built that is 100% based on renewable energy?
