Building Technology Experts: Online Panel E2 Forum Frankfurt

News from the elevator – what customers demand

June 2020

Missed the latest online morning panel on 18 June 2020? - Then take another look at its stream.

The second edition of Building Technology Experts brought together virtually the major operators of elevator and escalator systems in Germany with renowned industry representatives:

Stephen Guhr, Managing Director, Vonovia Engineering GmbH
Bernd Hanke
, Head of Facility Management, Deutsche Bahn Station & Service
Andreas Wermelinger
, Strategic Asset Management, Competence Center Lifts and Escalators, Swiss Federal Railways SB
Sönke Mestemacher, Chairman of the Management Board, Schindler Elevators and Escalators Germany
Hans Sacherer
, Head of Sales High Rise, thyssenkrupp Elevator Europe

The participants started into a refreshing dialogue on how operators and manufacturers can achieve greater efficiency and availability of systems in times of increasing requirements (e.g.: seamless travel routing in app services and barrier-free access) and new technical possibilities (real-time remote maintenance, predictive maintenance via cloud solutions and IoT). The participating market leaders stand for a considerable number of lifts and escalators and are examples for real-time integration into highly complex, individual overall processes of national mobility and transport network planning as well as integrated building services engineering.

The manufacturers of elevator and escalator systems support several hundred thousand installations in Germany in maintenance, service and operating data management. The individual operators on the panel with Deutsche Bahn (DB Station & Service), Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and Vonovia all have a portfolio of around 3,500 such systems. The participants either rely on the manufacturer's maintenance contracts and proprietary data solutions and monitoring with their own small data cockpit in the cloud, or in turn invest in their own operating and data management, sometimes with a large expenditure of resources. Both paths increase the diversity in the management of operating data, which all representatives perceive as an obstacle in view of increasing technical networking and which led them to look to the building technology and construction industry to introduce open data standards in order to promote data access and transparency.

Conclusion: The decisive question on both sides of the panel as to who has and can or wants to share data sovereignty is not an ideological one, but one that can and should be approached along reasonable business models with clear resilience criteria for cyber security and in a trusting cooperation. The team of Building Technology Experts is compiling the dialogue of 18 June in a topic paper and making it available to the participants. The dialogue will be continued at the Building Technology Experts and at the E2 Forum Frankfurt (in June 2021). You are cordially invited.

The online panels of the Building Technology Experts are part of a cooperation between Messe Frankfurt and its partner BUILTWORLD, the ecosystem of innovative real estate industry.
