Accessible bathrooms follow clear standards and are designed to allow users to manage personal hygiene as independently as possible – for example through level-access showers and sufficient movement space. Age-appropriate bathrooms also focus on comfort and safety, but are based on technical minimum standards and are often seen as a preventive measure. Care-appropriate bathrooms go one step further: they must meet the needs not only of the person receiving care, but also of the supporting caregivers. This places specific demands on space planning, equipment and accessibility – especially in small floor plans.
The discussion also covers aspects such as user-friendliness, retrofit options, funding opportunities and the importance of early planning.
