Designing Wellness: Anatomy of a spa project

27 Mar 2025

Ice-cold, loud, and deeply human – this talk invites you into the bold design of Othership, where wellness isn't quiet solitude but a collective, energizing experience.

In the Architonic Talk at ISH 2025, Ali McQuaid Mitchell (Futurestudio, Toronto) shares her experience in designing contemporary wellness environments such as the "Othership" sauna in New York. The focus is on how spatial design, materials, lighting, and acoustics influence both physical and social experiences. Especially in a post-pandemic context, the demand for communal spaces that promote health and relaxation is growing. McQuaid explains through real-world projects how emotional impact, technical requirements, and sustainability can be harmonized—from natural materials to advanced water systems and lighting concepts.

...is the founder and creative director of Futurestudio, a Toronto-based design practice known for its emotionally intelligent and materially sensitive approach to architecture and interiors. With a background in both industrial and interior design, she bridges spatial storytelling with technical innovation. Her projects—ranging from private residences to immersive wellness environments—are characterized by layered material palettes, mindful lighting, and a deep understanding of how space can impact human experience. Her work has garnered international attention for reimagining the intersection between design, health, and community.
