Practical report from the city of Salzgitter

Municipal heat planning

21 Mar 2025

Salzgitter’s heat planning case study demonstrates how digital twins and data-driven strategies help harness potentials like industrial waste heat and enable concrete steps toward achieving climate neutrality by 2045.

The city of Salzgitter presents a practical report on municipal heat planning, showing how it uses a digital twin to identify concrete decarbonisation measures. Faced with complex structures, high CO₂ emissions, and limited influence, the city relies on data-based tools and external expertise to efficiently tap into potentials such as industrial waste heat. The goal is to establish an economically viable, climate-neutral heat supply by 2045.
